This first essay you will turn in is called a Response Essay and will be worth 100 points. You will turn in a packet/folder which will include a brainstorming exercise, an outline, a draft written in class, and a typed final draft.
Kafka's Metamorphosis Response Essay I:
This weekend, you should think about your essay topic. Topics MUST be specific and focused. I listed below themes you may wish to explore:
The meaning of food and hunger in the story
Pain and suffering (for any character)
Gregor's guilt
Gregor's freedom and exile
The meaning of cleanliness
Abandonment (abandonment for any character)
The meaning of Gregor's transformation into an insect
Transformation (of any character)
A thorough discussion of the meaning of space or setting in the story (the room, the apartment, dining room)
The importance of material possessions
Character studies of the mother, the father, Gregor, the charwoman and Grete.
You do not have use any of these possible topics. However, please keep in mind that you must be ready to explore and write about an insightful topic in relation to the story. I will not accept generalized topics. If you wish to write about a particular character, you must be able to present an idea about that character which has not been explored or discussed in class.
Please come to class prepared to create. You should spend the weekend thinking about your topic and taking notes on what you believe you would like to say about the topic.
